Leather Weather

Yes, I am suppose to be on a blogging break right now. I am meant to be studying for my college exams and not procrastinating via the Internet. But it's pouring from the heavens and I cant spend my mental break out in the fresh air so here is a very quick little post. I got this divine leatherette monster clutch/laptop cover in the post today and I couldn't wait three whole weeks ti blog about it so here I am. This beautiful piece was made from scratch by a fellow Cork blogger Tar Mar who is selling customised items via paypal. The photo really doesn't do it justice and I really really cant wait to style it. I feel it will fast become a staple piece! I'm also looking forward to many more wonderful pieces from this talented lady.

Tea and Tulips

So I have a major blogger crush on Stefanie of Steffy's Pros and Cons who also happens to have her own clothing store called Tea and Tulips where you can purchase some of the amazing vintage pieces she has worn in her outfit posts. The darling of retro she approaches fashion with a charming and quirky attitude. From vintage dresses and off beat accessories this vintage-influenced beauty safely secures the title of 'Queen of Kitsch'. Her online store Tea and Tulips contains a treasure trove of pre-loved garments and thankfully delivers worldwide

My in store favourites.

Interview with Cillian O'Connor

When one needs to keep up with the world of mens fashion Male Mode.com should be your first stop. From fashion musings to stylish wit Cillian O’Connor provides it all.

What first attracted you to the world of blogging?
I was living back home in rural Wexford with little to no access to any kind of fashion community, so I went online and discovered a discussion between people from all the over the world that I knew I had to join. Also, a blog, for me, meant regular writing practice so it functioned as a kind of portfolio/scrapbook at first.

How, in your eyes, has the fashion blogging scene changed in the past year?
It’s become a lot more respected by traditional press and businesses with several top fashion bloggers aiding in the evolution of the term ‘blogging’ from a nerdy hobby to a steady career.

How would you rate the Irish fashion industry?
It fights hard with limited resources. There is a wealth of talent in the country but sadly, due to a lack of funding and relevant markets, gifted designers find they have to move abroad to pursue their career. Still, the public’s interest in fashion has grown immensely and more and more young people are doing it for themselves (blogs, labels etc.) rather than bowing to the Irish fashion establishment.

Do you feel that fashion is still capable of shocking conventional society or has it all been done already?
I really don’t know; in parts of Ireland, yes, I think a lot of the population are still v. innocent when it comes to fashion and haven’t been exposed to much of what e.g. Dubliners or Corkonians might be familiar with. On an international level, though, it’s really all been done and I don’t mean that in an apathetic sense, but rather that it takes a LOT for most people to be genuinely taken aback by the audacity of an outfit.

What has been your own blogging career highlight thus far?
Probably seeing some of my favourite designers show in London e.g. Carolyn Massey and James Long, and/or being featured in The Times recently.

Who are your own fashion icons or inspirational heroes?
I tend to be quite fickle so I don’t have set sources of inspiration but fictional characters e.g. (Querelle from Jean Genet’s novel of the same name) and certain fashion personalities e.g. Prince Pelayo always provide something for me to think about style-wise.

Which item in your wardrobe best reflects your personality?
Tough one but I’d say my Bench canvas and leather boots. They’re not brash but, at the same time, don’t shy away from making a statement.

Parting advice for the men of Ireland….
Learn to love dressing yourself. No matter what anyone says, it’s one of the key ways in which you communicate with others, and you don’t want words put in your mouth.

Thanks to Cillian allowing us such an interesting insight!

Interview with Laura Whiston

Laura Whiston, of Whisty Blogs Dublin Fashion, is one of my favourite fashion bloggers. A vixen of vintage and a mistress of charity chic, she combines fearless style with rascal attitude. Naturally I wanted to ask the lady herself a few questions about her views of all things fashion and blogging.

How did you get into blogging?
It was a natural move really. I was working as a fashion writer in a monthly magazine and I realised that there was a lot of things that I wasn’t able to include in the mag pages. Things that maybe didn’t suit the readership or were just too alternative to feature in such a mainstream publication.

What qualities do you think a person needs to be a fashion journalist?
Dedication, determination, an all encompassing passion to do the job and a thick skin helps as well. I will add however, that when it comes to getting your foot in the door, luck comes before writing-talent in very many cases.

How would you rate fashion in Ireland?
I would say that at first it can seem very safe and mainstream; a lot of very talented designers feel the need to move abroad, especially as they are starting out. If you take the time and make an effort, however, you will find fashion and style that is fresh and exciting as well as being typically Irish. Ireland has a lot to offer those that are more open minded about fashion, you just have to go the extra distance to find it.

If you could steal someone’s wardrobe, who would it be?
Jimi Hendrix. No doubt.

Which item in your wardrobe best reflects your personality?
Mood dependant, but anything in there that is individual with a good story to tell. (There are a few pieces that answer that description, I can assure you).

What's been your most outrageous stage outfit so far?
(Does this mean blog outfit or outfit in general, neither of which are ever particularly outrageous!?) One of my favourite style posts was when I wore an Edwardian-style coat and diamonds with hot pants and ‘bondage’ tights. The shots came out really well and it’s really good fun mixing up different era’s, moods and styles.

What advice would you give your 18 year old self?
Good lord, what advise wouldn’t I!?! When I was 18 I wasn’t ever afraid of wearing something different to my peers. (As my school alumni photograph will attest to, and much to the unfathomed amusement of my Head Teacher). I would advise myself to keep that attitude and try hard not to toe the line when it comes to what I wear. I would say to myself, remember to keep things ‘now’ but always ensure that you keep your personal style integral to the overall look.

Yours Stylishly,
Laura Whiston, (Whisty)
